Working in
the Netherlands

Solutions for everyone

You are considering working in the Netherlands. That’s a good choice. Because the Netherlands offers a number of benefits for ‘highly skilled migrants’. Highly skilled migrants are migrant workers who are highly educated and want to use this knowledge within a Dutch business.

One of the main benefits is that during the first five years that you work in the Netherlands, 30% of your salary can be paid to you tax-free. The following conditions have been specified in order to benefit from this scheme:

  • You are employed by your employer.
  • You have a specific expertise that is rare or absent in the Dutch labour market - you have that expertise if your salary excluding the tax-free allowance in the Netherlands exceeds € 41,954 in 2023
  • You were recruited outside the Netherlands.

You need a sponsor in order to obtain a residence permit

If you want to work, study or live in the Netherlands but are not from an EU country or Switzerland, you will need a residence permit

To come to the Netherlands, you will need a sponsor to bring you to the Netherlands if you are a non-European highly skilled migrant. The employer must be recognised as a sponsor by the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).

Obtaining sponsor status is a lengthy process.

Umbrella Company is recognised as a sponsor by the IND and is fully informed about the laws and rules around highly skilled migrants and employment law in general. If the company you want to work for is not recognised by the IND as a sponsor, the Umbrella Company can act as your formal employer.

As an employer, we offer full support during your permit application and ensure that, as a highly skilled migrant, you have all the necessary documents before your first working day. Examples of required documents include a Burgerservicenummer (Citizen Service Number, abbreviated BSN), a Dutch bank account and the correct residence documents. We can also help with procedures for your family members.

Our services: Payrolling

Payrolling in accordance with all Dutch government guidelines is specialist work. In addition to our service and support in obtaining a residence permit, the Umbrella Company is responsible for payroll and all legal and administrative personnel activities.

  • The payrolling company is the legal employer and deals with all employer-related matters.
  • The client company is responsible for day-to-day management and supervision.

You are interested in working for a Dutch company and are already in discussions with a potential client. During the job interviews, you agree together on the terms of employment, such as salary and the length of the contract. When you have reached agreement, the company contacts us, and we include all the agreed terms of employment in the employment contract. You can expect the following from us:

  • The right employment contract and terms of employment.
  • The right salary paid on time.
  • The financial and administrative rigmarole.

Who is your employer?

The payrolling company, in this case the Umbrella Company, is your formal employer. We pay your salary and take care of financial and administrative tasks such as reporting sickness. While we are the actual employer, the company where you perform your work is responsible for your day-to-day management.
